Silicones in Beauty Products - What Happens to Your Skin and the Environment?

Sofie Bergsman

During Earth Month, we want to highlight an important topic: silicones in beauty products and their impact on both our skin and the environment. But what exactly are silicones, and why do we want to avoid them?

Silicones are synthetic substances commonly used in skincare and haircare products to create a smooth and soft feel. They act like a protective film that coats the hair to give a temporary illusion of shine and smoothness. The problem is that they don’t just sit on the hair – they also coat the skin when these products are used in the shower. When silicones come into contact with the skin, such as on your back, they can clog pores and cause irritation or even acne. Since silicones don’t easily rinse off with water, they can build up over time and disrupt the skin's natural balance.

When products containing silicones are rinsed off, they end up in our water systems and eventually in nature. Because silicones are difficult to break down, they accumulate in waterways and affect ecosystems. They can pollute aquatic life and disrupt the natural cycle.

At Under Your Skin, we use natural ingredients that care for your hair and skin without clogging or harming the environment. Our products are free from silicones, sulfates, and parabens – and instead enriched with plant-based ingredients that truly nourish. Want to make a difference for both your skin and the planet? Try our clean, natural products this Earth Month and be part of the change.
